Hearing words incorrectly

Today, I was working in a classroom and I heard a student say the word “almanac”. At first, it sounded like the word “almond”. Then I realized what word they had really said. I also realized that I have no clue as to what the word “almanac” means. I think that I did know what it meant, but for now it has escaped my brain.
