Doing the opposite of what my boyfriend said

Earlier today, my boyfriend and I were in his living room. He said to me, "don't put your hands up." I did the opposite and put my hands up, touching the blades of the ceiling fan that I hadn't remembered was there. He asked if I was okay and I said that I was fine. Then he asked me why I did what he asked me NOT to do. My only explanation was that I heard the words, "do not put your hands up", but I either forgot the "do not" or I just didn't understand what these two words meant. He was a little worried and said, maybe I should shut the fans off so you don't hurt yourself. I said that I would be fine. I still don't understand why this happened. I'm only guessing how my brain was processing his words. Another adventure in living life with a memory impairment. A short time later, I actually laughed about this happening. I know that usually when someone says don’t that, I don't do the opposite. It certainly is a learning experience for both of us. I just need to figure this all out. I know that I do struggle with my lack of comprehension. Sometimes I can read and recognize the word/s, but I have no clue what they mean. He has told me that this episode has scared him a little, but I know that we will continue to figure things out.
