The challenges with my short term memory

Today, I’m at home recovering from left knee surgery that I had yesterday. A short time ago, I used my crutches to walk to the bathroom and get some things done including washing my hair. Then I tried to remember if I had gone to the bathroom before washing my hair. I wasn’t quite sure, so I thought that I should go before sitting back down on the couch. This is what often happens to me, especially when I’m thinking of more than one thing at once.
This often happens when I’m having a conversation with someone because all of a sudden, I will forget what we have been talking about. This is very frustrating for me but I try to be kind to myself and not get upset. Instead, I will tell the person, “please remind me what you just said, because I totally forgot what we were talking about”. I might also say with a smile, "what were we just talking about?" If they don’t know about the problem with my memory, they may think that I don’t really care what they have to say, but in reality, I do care or I wouldn’t have asked for clarification.
