(Chapter 16 The Many Problems with Words in my book)
Lately, I've noticed that I am having some problems with language. I remember some time ago; my friend used the word “forgotten” and for some reason that word sounded strange to me. I asked her if it was really a word and she said yes. Right now, I understand the word forgot and it sounds fine to me, but somehow adding “ten” to it confuses me. The other day, a friend used the word “bitten” in a sentence. I told her that the word sounded funny to me. This is another word with the “en” at the end. I'm not sure what is going on, but it seems weird to me. I think that I've always been very good with words, spelling and meaning of them, but over time, that has sometimes changed for me.
It is just something else that I will have to learn to adjust to, which I know that I will. I also know that depending on how a sentence is worded, will make a difference on how I can understand it. An example of this would be, "Can you not do that?" I can better understand this if it is said this way, " Please don't do that." That second sentence is much clearer for me to understand. I think that if someone uses double negatives, that can also be a problem for me to comprehend. When something like this happens again, I will just continue to tell someone, so that we can figure it out together.
