(Chapter 6 Living with a Memory Impairment in my book)

When I was growing up and as a young adult, I was always a very good speller. As time has gone on, having a memory impairment has affected my life and now I struggle with spelling a lot of words. A short time ago, I tried to write the word experience, but as I wrote it down, it didn't quite look right. I wrote it “expie”, then stopped. I went on my laptop and started typing and for some reason I knew how to type it. The word just came to me as I typed it correctly. Why wasn't I able to write it correctly on a piece of paper just seconds earlier is a mystery to me?

What is even more confusing to me is after typing it correctly, I went back to the piece of paper and spelled it wrong a 2nd time! This time, I spelled it “expierie” Why was I able to type the word and spell it correctly, but when writing it, I spelled it wrong twice! Very strange! It took me three times to write this word, spelling it correctly on the piece of paper, but yet I was able to type it the correctly the first time.

It is so strange how my brain works. Over the past ten years or possibly more, I have found myself looking up the spelling of words. Some days are better than others. There are days when I can type and all the words are spelled correctly the 1st time, but other days are much more challenging for me.
