Trouble with multi-step verbal directions

(Chapter 6 Living with a Memory Impairment in my book)

Yesterday, I stopped at the town hall to see if I could vote by absentee ballot because I have a bad knee that doesn't allow me to stand or walk for long periods of time without causing me a great deal of pain. The clerk gave me a form to fill out. After I gave her the form, all filled out, she asked if I wanted to vote now and I said yes. She handed me a ballot and two envelopes and gave me verbal instructions. I sat down and filled out my ballot and filled out the outside of one envelope, but I had no idea which envelope I was supposed to put the ballot in. After filling out the ballot, I went up to the clerk, told her that my ballot was all set, but I told her that I also had memory problems, so I didn't know what else to do. She was very patient and told me which envelope to put the ballot in, seal it. Then had me put that sealed envelope in another envelope and seal it.

For quite a while, I have noticed that when someone gives me multi-step verbal directions, I cannot possibly remember all of them. I might remember one or two steps, but that is all. I will usually need them written down, then I'm fine. When I was working, some staff knew about my memory problems and some really didn't. I would choose to tell someone if I felt that they needed to know.
