I think that sometimes when people think of someone having a memory impairment, they think that it just affects their memory, but it can affect so much more and it does.
Last night, after work, I stopped at a coffee shop to get a hot chocolate. This is not something that I do that often. I drove around the building to where the speaker and menu was. When it was my turn, I drove up to the speaker and I ordered a hot chocolate. As I was waiting for the person in front of me to be done at the window, I was looking ahead of me where the parking lot exit was. I needed to get my bearings, so to speak, so that I could figure out the right way to pull out of the parking lot. I needed to make sure that I would be going in the right direction in order to get on the highway to go home. I looked to the right, to the left and across the street. I was able to figure out that when I was done at the drive-up window, I needed to take a right out of the parking lot, go past a fast-food restaurant, then take the exit on the right to get on the highway to go home. I know that if I didn’t have a memory impairment, this task would have been done without much thought. I was able to exit the parking lot and I got home without any problems. I think that I have always had a bad sense of direction.
