My confusion with buying a “white” birthday cake for a good friend

(Chapter 8 Confused & Chapter 11 Stress and Anxiety in my book)

I went to the grocery store to pick up a few items including a white birthday cake for a good friend of mine. That is when the confusion started. I found a chocolate cake and lots of cakes that were labeled “gold cake”, I thought to myself “do they mean white or yellow cake?” I didn't want to feel stupid so I didn't ask anyone who was working in the bakery department. Instead, I decided to look at the cupcakes that looked like yellow cake and it said “gold cake” on the package. I still had no clue what this gold cake was going to taste like so I left the store without a cake.

I decided to stop at another store, but unfortunately after looking around the bakery department, the same problem existed “gold cake.” I could not find a cake that was labeled white. So, I left that store without buying a cake. I think that a gold cake is yellow rather than white.

On my way home I stopped at a third grocery store, and again I had the same problem. There were only chocolate cakes and gold cakes but none that were labeled “white.” I was so frustrated so I decided to go down the baking aisle and I got a white cake mix. I went home and I made a white cake with white frosting. I just wished that this simple task of buying a cake wasn't so confusing for me! My world of living with a memory impairment! How does something so simple become so stressful?

After my friend and her husband arrived at my apartment to celebrate her birthday, I told her about my problems buying a cake. She felt so bad and she apologized. I told her that she didn’t need to do that because it wasn’t anyone’s fault. It just happened. After that, we both had a good laugh. It certainly was a nice way to end this otherwise stressful time for me.

Later when I researched “gold cake” online, it said “a butter cake in which the yolks but not the whites of eggs are used. That tells me what I thought which is a gold cake is similar to a yellow cake. It is not a white cake.
