Is mild cognitive impairment a form of dementia?

I think that the answer to this question depends on who you ask or what you read online. Some websites and doctors feel that mild cognitive impairment is one of the first stages of dementia. From what I have been told and read since my diagnosis in 2005, is that MCI is not dementia. MCI means that a person's brain doesn't function like most people their age. Some of the symptoms are very similar to different forms of dementia. MCI doesn't always progress to dementia, but I think that the chances of progressing to dementia is much higher within the first five years after being diagnosed.
