(Chapter 23 Living with a memory impairment and being a Nana in my book)
I think that it is a positive thing that I was diagnosed with MCI before I had any grandchildren because they will never know me before I had a memory impairment. The way I am now is how they have always known me. Hopefully, they won’t need to make an adjustment because my memory has declined. As they get older, I will tell them about some of my memory problems so that they will understand why I don’t remember some things that they tell me. I think that if I had been diagnosed and started showing symptoms after my grandchildren were born and they were much older that it might be difficult for them. I think that I will know when the time is right for me to talk to them about my memory problems. I have a feeling that it won’t be just one conversation with them because I think that I will gradually be preparing them for this. I say this because I am very open and honest with people.
