(Chapter 26 MCI Tool Box in my book)
A few years ago, I stopped working due to the injuries from a bad fall at my work. Now I volunteer as a senior companion each week. One day a week, I take a ninety-two-year-old blind woman to visit her husband in the nursing home. Because there is a lot of walking from the parking lot, into the building and to his room, I bring her inside in a wheelchair. After we got on the elevator, I felt like I was asking her each week what floor, so I decided to find a way to help me remember it. Her husband is on the third floor and I have three grown children. So, if I get on the elevator and I'm not sure what floor to go to, all I have to do is think, "how many children do I have?" The answer to that is three so I have to go to the third floor.
This past week as we were getting on the elevator, she asked me if I remembered what floor we were going to. I told her that sometimes I can't remember so I came up with a trick to help remind me. Then I explained to her how I put a connection with the floor that her husband is on and the number of children that I have. She said that was really creative. None of the ladies, nor the person who hired me for this position know about my memory impairment. I have told all four of these women that I have a terrible memory and that is all.
