Some days I still miss the old “me”

I saw this on social media: “Do you ever miss yourself? The person you were before life changed everything.” My answer to this question would be this: “Yes, I do! Mostly the "me" before I started dealing with the symptoms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).” Sometimes while living with a memory impairment, you can still remember the “you” before all of the symptoms turned your life upside down! Although it might be tempting to go down the road of “I wish that I wasn't dealing with these challenges.” Try not to go there because otherwise you could be stuck in “denial”. Instead embrace and appreciate all those moments of clarity, knowing that at any moment things could change a little or quite a lot.

When things are going well, it might be a good time to make a list of ways that you can manage the stress and anxiety that your symptoms might be causing. Perhaps going for a walk, listening to music or spending time with someone you love. Only you can decide what works for you. If the “fog” rolls in, try to do your best to remain calm. I have found that if I am not calm, the symptoms are so much worse!
