July 3, 2020 (Chapter 23 Living with a memory impairment and being a Nana in my book)

Right now, I would say that I’m doing really well with my cognition. Last month when my daughter and her husband went to the hospital to have a new baby, I babysat my two-and-a-half-year-old twin granddaughters. I was there with the twins for about three and a half days and everything went well! This was the longest time that I had ever babysat them and I knew that I could do it!

When they were first born, my daughter was very apprehensive about me babysitting. Because I live with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and not dementia I never thought that babysitting my granddaughters would be a problem.

Over time I have babysat them for longer periods of time but I had never been asked to babysit them overnight, but I definitely wanted to.

I let my daughter know that I could handle watching the girls while they go to the hospital to have the new baby. She told me that she would let me know and I asked her who else she was considering. She told me that it was one of her closest friends who has two daughters.

I think that it was about a month before her due date when she told me that I could baby-sit when they go to the hospital. I told her that I could definitely do that. I was very excited to babysit them overnight and about my granddaughter who was going to be born soon.

About three weeks before the baby’s due date, she called me and asked me if I wanted to come over to her house and I said yes. I usually see her and her family once a week. While I was there, she asked me if I could babysit tomorrow so her and her husband could go out to eat and I said of course. I think that this was their way of making sure that I could handle the mealtime and bedtime routine with the twins. Everything went well and the twins were in bed asleep when their parents came home. I do think that I had a little fog but the twins were sleeping and it only lasted for a very short time.
