I think that it is very important to let someone do things that they can do on their own or with a little help. I don’t want anyone doing things for me that I can still do myself. I caution caregivers to have lots of patience and faith. Please try not to jump in right away and do something for the person who you are caring for. If they are still pretty high functioning like me, you could ask if they need your help first. I know that this is difficult to do, but I also know that as someone who has a memory impairment, it is very important for me to continue to be independent. I know that living with a memory impairment affects my self-esteem. The person who is living with a memory impairment is still a person, but they are different than they once were. I think that they should always be treated with respect and dignity.
