Why couldn't I figure this out?

Yesterday I went to a wake for a very close friend's husband. After I parked my car, I walked towards the funeral home. I saw people standing outside the funeral home but I didn't have any idea that they were in line to go inside. I was pretty clueless! I walked right past the people who were standing on the stairs. It wasn't until I opened the door that a woman who works there told me that there was a line. I said that I was sorry and I turned around and went back down the stairs. I got in the end of the line. I wonder why I didn't know that all these people were in line. Why couldn't I figure this out?
