Why didn’t I know what that sound was?

This morning, I heard a loud sound outside my apartment. To me, it sounded like the furnace was being noisy. While this was going on, I was thinking that it was very loud and I was hoping that the building manager would shut if off very soon. It wasn’t until hours later that I found out from another resident that it was the fire alarm. I guess that I was pretty clueless! It makes me wonder if we had a fire in the apartment building, would I know enough to evacuate? I don’t really know the answer to that. I think that I have lived in this apartment for about two years. Before living here, I was living in a private home in another town. I don’t think that I have lived in an apartment building since August. 1979. I think a few months after I moved here, there was an alarm that went off and I did evacuate. I was standing outside the building with the other residents. I don’t remember why the fire alarm went off but there wasn’t a fire.

I really need to figure out how to prevent this from happening again. I need to make sure that I can stay safe.
